Lead Chains

Lead chains provide a higher level of leverage than a standard lead rope, used for trot ups, sales, in-hand showing, and everyday handling of stallions or stronger horses where additional control is needed. The range is supplied entirely by Kentucky Horsewear and covers both full lead-and-chain combinations and standalone chain sections that attach to an existing lead or head collar.

Full lead-and-chain combinations are stocked in both standard and leather-covered formats. The standard version pairs Kentucky’s soft artificial leather hand strap with a brass-coloured chain section, set up for trot ups and sales as well as for handling excitable horses, and is built to wipe clean and resist moisture without absorbing dirt. The leather-covered version takes the same artificial leather and runs it over the chain itself, keeping the leverage effect while removing direct metal contact against the noseband for horses that react to bare chain. A standalone brass-coloured chain section is stocked separately to attach to a presentation or stallion lead, matching the brass hardware on Kentucky head collar buckles for a coordinated finish.

For showing and presentation work without a chain, the collection also includes Beta BioThane leads in different widths, finished with brass fittings and an engravable name plate, alongside a plaited nylon lead built from the same materials as Kentucky’s plaited head collar range, available in a wider colour selection for matched-set turnout. The BioThane and artificial leather options are anti-slip, do not stretch, and wipe down with a damp cloth between competitions. Matching head collars, lead ropes, and head collar accessories sit within the wider head collars and lead ropes section.

Over-nose position gives clearer control for strong stallions; under-chin encourages lower heads during loading.

About thirty centimetres allows guidance without excess weight that could knock young teeth.

Brass may leave a faint green bloom; wipe the nose after work and apply clear barrier cream to prevent staining.
