An eggbutt fixes the mouthpiece to the ring, and that small design change is why so many riders move to one. Our selection runs from Bombers Bits and Aster Titanium through to Trust Inno Sense and Velari in steel, sweet iron and copper. Because the cheek can’t rotate, the bit stays still and won’t pinch the lips the way a loose ring sometimes can.

That stillness is the selling point. Sensitive horses, or ones that fuss and chew at a mobile bit, tend to accept an eggbutt more readily because there’s nothing sliding about in the mouth. It also stops the bit being pulled through, which is a genuine risk on a strong horse ridden in a plain loose ring. You lose a touch of the tongue movement a loose ring offers, so it comes down to what your horse actually settles in.

Not sure an eggbutt is the answer? Compare it against the loose ring snaffle for more play, or a full cheek if you want extra help turning. The complete horse bits range is here, and you’ll find the matching bridles alongside it.

Frequently Asked Questions

An eggbutt has a fixed rounded cheek, which limits the movement of the mouthpiece at the corners of the lips compared with a loose ring. The exact feel depends on the mouthpiece shape, material and fit.

Some horses prefer the stability of a fixed cheek, particularly if they are unsettled by a very mobile mouthpiece. This is individual, so assess the whole design with a qualified bitting specialist rather than assuming one cheek is universally gentler.

Choose the width and thickness for the horse's mouth and follow the manufacturer's guidance on position. Check for pinching, rubbing, excessive movement or resistance and review the fit with an appropriate professional if concerns remain.
