The top ring connects to the cheekpieces and applies poll pressure to encourage the horse to lower its head, while the half-ring exerts leverage for a head-raising effect, resulting in a gag action. Also known as a Universal, the 2.5 ring is considered the mildest type of ring gag, as the half-ring reduces the leverage exerted on the mouthpiece. In contrast, the eggbutt sides are designed to prevent pinching and provide a more direct action than a loose ring.
